Which Was The First Rolex Explorer – Reference 6150 or 6350?
As the story goes, Norgay and Hillary had a Rolex watch in their kit as they reached the Mount Everest summit on May 29, 1953. Rolex provided them with an Oyster Perpetual Superlative chronometer with a white dial, Ref. 6098, generally considered a âPre-Explorerâ model for the expedition that withstood the harsh environments. The watch certainly testified to Rolexâs ability to create watches that could survive all conditions.
There has been no controversy yet, as itâs well-accepted that this wasnât the first Explorer model. However, Rolex had already registered the trademark for the Explorer name months earlier, in January of that same year (1953).
The debate here is the next piece â the Reference 6150 with all the hallmarks of the Explorer, just the name was missing on the dial. The models had âPrecisionâ marked above 6 oâclock, but some examples came with the word âExplorerâ instead. The Ref. 6150 carried the same non-COSC Calibre A296 as the Everest-climbing 6098 piece. There is no OCC text on the dial, which means it is not a chronometer, and as said, not all of the references say the word âExplorerâ on the dial, leading collectors to believe that the Ref. 6150 is not a true Explorer.
The next model, Ref. 6350, which is largely considered the first Explorer, had the name âExplorerâ printed on all dials, but now below 12 oâclock. Some models came with pencil hands instead of Mercedes hands, while others had a honeycomb or waffle-textured dial, exclusively limited to this reference. Unlike the 6150, the Ref. 6350 was equipped with the COSC-certified Calibre A296, making it an officially certified chronometer â a notable distinction from its predecessor.
Both the Ref. 6150 and 6350 were introduced to the world in 1953 and were exposed to certain design experiments while they both were finding their grip. Both references, however, retained essential Explorer hallmarksâblack dials with Arabic numerals at 3, 6, and 9 oâclock, housed in a 36mm Oyster case, and a water resistance of 50 metres. The Explorer Ref. 6350 generally showed up with the standard black gilt dial with Mercedes hands.
While both the 6150 and 6350 were produced simultaneously, the Ref. 6350 was discontinued in 1954, and the Ref. 6150 ran until 1959.

The Mercedes-style hands on this vintage Explorer 6610 are also something we see on the modern Explorer versions.
An interesting feature is the waterproof indication (50m) on the dial printed in red under the âExplorerâ label on some of the early examples, which was removed on the later 6610 models. The slim Calibre 1030 allowed for the flatter case back and marked the end of the âBubblebackâ Explorers. One of the rarest Explorer 6610 models had a âwhiteâ dial instead of the regular black gilt, and it is affectionately referred to as the âAlbinoâ model. The Ref. 6610 gave way to the Ref. 1016âone of the longest-running Rolex watch references ever.
1960s â 1989: Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016

The conclusion of Ref. 6610 brings us to the beloved Explorer reference 1016. This reference boasts some of the most notable design traits that will forever be etched with the model. This refined Explorer featured a streamlined case and improved water resistance, and the movement was upgraded to the Calibre 1560, followed by Calibre 1570 in the mid-sixties, enhancing reliability and precision.
Rolex added a hacking seconds feature to the Calibre 1570 in 1971, which continued to power the Explorer 1016 till the end of its production run. The hacking feature meant that when the crown was pulled out for a more precise time setting, the seconds hand stopped completely. The water resistance also doubled to 100 metres. Other improvements to the Explorer 1016 included the switch from radium to tritium for its luminous markers, the traditional glossy black gilt dials being replaced by matte black dials with white printing, introduction of the âSuperlative Chronometer Officially Certifiedâ text on the dial, lume became wider and flatter, and adding solid links to the Oyster bracelet.
Lesser-Known Rolex Explorer Models: Ref. 5500 & Ref. 6429

Some unusual Explorer models deviated from the established design formula, starting with the reference 5500, which was basically a blend of Explorer and Air-King. It had a 34mm case diameter instead of the usual 36mm, and the words âPRECISIONâ and âSUPER PRECISIONâ were printed on the glossy black gilt dial over 6 oâclock, like the Air-King and early Explorer Ref. 6150 models. But the word âEXPLORERâ was still there below 12 oâclock. Another glitch is Ref. 6429, which is also a 34mm model with an Explorer-themed dial with tritium lume, but only printed with âCOMMANDOâ at the bottom and âOSYTERâ at the top. This watch was sold as a âmilitaryâ Rolex at Abercrombie & Fitch in the 1960s, and is also reported to have been offered for sale at US military bases without the word âCOMMANDOâ on the dial. Only Rolex and Oyster were printed below the 12 oâclock on the watches sold to the US military bases as a simple hand-wound timepiece.
1989 – 2001: Arrival of the Modern Rolex Explorer Ref. 14270

Introduced in 1989, the Ref. 14270 carried the Explorer into the modern era. A redesigned 36mm case and updated dial with applied white gold hour markers added a touch of luxury while preserving the watchâs trademark legibility.
Tritium became Super Luminova, standard lugs replaced the traditional drilled ones, sapphire crystal replaced the acrylic, and the movement was also upgraded to the Calibre 3000, offering improved precision and shock resistance. The 100 metres of water resistance and matte black dial became the standard now.
The early Explorer 14270 models (1989 â 1991) were called âBlackoutâ models as they used black lacquer filling for the applied numerals, offering a somewhat stealthy appearance (the markers are still filled with lume). For the first time, Rolex compromised low-light legibility for style in this Explorer.
Next, from 1991 to 1994, Rolex replaced this lacquer with the common white lume-filled indices and numerals. The early models during this period had drilled-through lugs and tritium (marked by a small âTâ below 6 oâclock as T-Swiss). By 1994, the design shifted to feature smooth, undrilled lugs, while the use of tritium lume continued.

2001 – 2010: Rolex Explorer Ref. 114270

There was little change between the Explorer 14270 and 114270. It features a 36mm steel case, an upgraded Calibre 3130 replacing the Calibre 3000, a dial with âSwiss Madeâ written on the 6 oâclock position, and a bracelet with solid end links. The Calibre 3130 came fitted with a shock and temperature-resistant Parachrom hairspring and balance bridge. The power reserve increased to 48 hours.
The Rolex Explorer Ref. 114270 was in production for nearly a decade before it was replaced by a model that changed the course of this collection forever.
2010 â 2021: Rolex Explorer Ref. 214270 (Mark 1 and 2)

Things changed big time with the Explorer Ref. 214270. Production ran from 2010 to 2016 for the Explorer Mark 1 models and from 2016 to 2021 for the Mark 2.
Mark 1: The case size moved from 36mm to 39mm, and the dial had a short handset and solid white gold Arabic numerals without lume. It also saw a movement upgrade to the Calibre 3132 with Rolexâs in-house shock system and Parachrom hairspring. These first six years of the 214270 saw the dial featuring the signature 3-6-9 Explorer numerals without white paint to enhance legibility.
Mark 2: In 2016, the handset was redesigned to better complement the dial’s perimeter, while the numerals returned to applied metalâthis time filled with Super-LumiNova for enhanced visibility. The Mark 2 versions saw an improvement in design, and it was clear that Rolex had no other intention than to improve upon the Explorer, as it had already done for years.
2021 â Present: Rolex Explorer Ref. 124270, 124273 And 224270

The current generation models introduced a handful of changes. For instance, the experimental 39mm case size returned to 36mm. Although the 39mm is relatively compact and more contemporary for a sports watch, 36mm is the sweet spot for the Explorer. The Oyster cases in these new gen models tend to sit a little larger on the wrist than the dimensions suggest, so the new Explorers arenât exactly âsmallâ.
However, all this confusion and debate about case measurement was put to rest when Rolex introduced the Ref. 224270 in 2023 with a 40mm case.
In 2021, the Ref. 124270 (steel) models, which felt almost identical to the 114270, were released, except for the added Crown between Swiss and Made at 6 oâclock.
